Artist's Description

A stinging nettle, Urtica dioica, infected with the pathogenic rust fungus, Puccinia urticata. The picture shows the base of a leaf that has produced a gall in response to infection by the fungus. The base of the leaf has thickened and the surface of the gall is covered with small volcano-like structures that are producing spores. Fungi of the genus Puccinia have a complex life cycle that includes development on an alternate host, and in some species may involve the production of up to five different types of spores. The alternate hosts of P. urticata are sedges (Carex spp.). The alternate host produces aeciospores that infect the primary host ( here, nettles ). The genus Puccinia comprises more than 4000 species. Many are of economic importance, particularly P. graminis, that infects cereal crops worldwide.
